Hello!  It is my pleasure to be the Secondary English Language (EL) Teacher for Mahtomedi Public Schools.  I have worked in this district since 1999, and have loved getting to know many families through the years as a K12 teacher.  I provide English Language Development through Content Based Instruction and collaborations/consultations with content teachers to guide instruction and assessment for English Language Learners.  I also promote the Bi/Multi-lingual Certificate program, wherein Heritage Languages are honored, and students can choose to be assessed for elective credit.  I have five children of my own, I love to perform Celtic/Americana Folk music at festivals, and I delve into nature whenever I can.
Dee Brust, Secondary EL Teacher
Students develop their Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills in EL Resource classes, as well as explore their content coursework individually and in small groups in the Resource Room in the Media Center.

View the links for MDE's ELL page on programs and procedures as well as the state's Bi-Multi-lingual Seal/Certificate information, and here for Mahtomedi's EL programnotes.

E-Learning Day information: Due to my limited schedule at the MS & HS, I will be available by email from 10:00-12:00 on designated days.  Since much of my work is to support students in content classes, I will join any google chat with another teacher per request.
For EL Resource class, watch/Listen to a TED Talk, two of my favorites are the Danger of a Single Story and Your Elusive Creative Genius.  Listen.  Record yourself for up to two minutes ReTelling as if you were giving a mini-version of the talk.  Write an on-topic question for the presenter and email it to me.

Our School
Mahtomedi High School has a heart for innovation, provides rigorous academic coursework, and supports students to explore extracurricular opportunities. Our teachers and staff are passionate and dedicated people who explore innovative ideas and teach our students new ways of thinking to support them in whatever career path they choose. Students engage in project-based learning to solve real-world problems using industry-standard technology in the nation’s first M.I.T. certified FabLab housed in a public school. Fine arts is a vital and robust part of the High School and our visual and performing arts classes include ceramics, digital art, choir, band, and event broadcasting. We also offer Flex Time during the school day when students may receive academic support, engage in college and career exploration, and connect over common interests. Over 90% of our student community engages in extracurricular activities that range from athletics to robotics. Students’ social and emotional learning is addressed through various avenues including a restorative practices approach for student behavior and through our Zephyr Link Crew mentoring program.
